Mindset Shifts for Success: From Employee to Entrepreneur
Transitioning from employee life to pursuing your creative passion as an entrepreneur is not just a career change; it’s a complete shift in mindset. And let’s be real “corporate” isn’t what many of us are, we are entry-level positioned people, looking for a change. Whether you’ve been working in the restaurant business, daycare’s or anything in between- you need to believe that you CAN chase your passions and change the trajectory of your career life. I knew the moment I walked away from working in restaurant management, that by the Grace of God, I would never have to do it again. I was done! I knew there was a better way, and I took that leap of faith. Even though it’s been hard at times, my mental health has greatly appreciated it, also.
As believers, we know that stepping into God’s calling often requires faith, courage, and a renewed way of thinking. At a 9-5 job, the steady paycheck provides a sense of security. But when you step into entrepreneurship, the financial aspects can feel uncertain. This is where faith becomes your foundation. Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.” Shift your mindset from relying solely on financial stability to trusting that God is your ultimate provider. Pray for discernment and provision, and take steps forward in faith, knowing He has a plan for your creative endeavors. You were born with that passion and with that talent for creative purpose in His will, and I firmly believe that!
At a 9-5 job, you’re often executing someone else’s vision. But, as an entrepreneur, God calls you to be the visionary. This requires boldness and creativity rooted in His purpose for your life. Pray, pray, and then pray some more to seek His guidance. Write down your goals and commit them to the Lord, as Proverbs 16:3 advises: “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and He will establish your plans.” When you commit everything to God, it also means striving to glorify Him in all you do, whether it’s your job, your art, or how you serve others. In a traditional job, your tasks often align with company objectives. But as a creative entrepreneur, your work can align directly with God’s calling. This shift requires viewing your creative pursuits as a ministry, not just a business.
Colossians 3:23 encourages us: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.” Let this perspective fuel your passion and remind you that your work can glorify Him and impact others.
As your own boss, you’ll need to create your own routines, since you’ll no longer be following a company schedule. This requires self-discipline and intentionality. Start each day with prayer, dedicating your time to God. Set boundaries for work and rest, ensuring that you’re stewarding your energy wisely. Remember, even Jesus took time to rest and pray. This was definitely the hardest part for me, it took me probably two months of struggling and mismanaging my time, to truly understand how important it is to hold onto a routine, even as a work-from-home freelancer, or setter-of-my-own-hours boss.
Leaving a steady job to pursue your dreams can be intimidating, but God doesn’t call us to live in fear. 2 Timothy 1:7 reminds us, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”Embrace the unknown with confidence, trusting that God will equip you for the work He has called you to do. When doubt creeps in, lean into His promises and surround yourself with a supportive community of faith. In the creative world, it’s easy to compare your journey to others. However, God’s plan for you is unique. Instead of comparing, celebrate others’ successes and focus on your own path. Trust that God’s timing for you is perfect, and that He will bless your obedience
Corporate life often glorifies hustle and productivity at the expense of well-being. As an entrepreneur, remember that God calls us to work from a place of rest and abundance. Matthew 11:28-30 invites us to find rest in Him: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” So…Work hard, but don’t neglect the spiritual, physical, and emotional care you need to sustain your journey. Entrepreneurship can make you hyper-aware of your resources, but God calls us to live with an open hand. Luke 6:38 reminds us, “Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” Look for ways to bless others through your creative work, whether it’s offering encouragement, mentorship, or tithing from your profits. Trust that God will multiply your generosity.
Stepping into entrepreneurship is a journey of faith, creativity, and purpose. By renewing your mindset and keeping God at the center, you can navigate this transition with confidence and grace. Remember, you are not alone in this journey-God is with you every step of the way, equipping you to use your gifts for His glory. Whether you’re starting a new t-shirt selling business, chasing your dreams of painting murals or like me- following your passions towards a career of writing and graphic design- Trust in God!
